Questions for Study and Discussion
These are questions you should think about and if possible, be able
to answer. Selected questions will be discussed in class, to review
for the exams. If we had a grader or TA, some of these questions
would be given as homework exercises.
Chapter 1, Overview, p 35:
- Questions 1 & 2 (definitions)
- Questions 7, 10, 11, 15, 17, 19, 20
Chapter 8, Interconnection Networks, p 409:
- Questions 1 & 2 (definitions)
- Questions 3, 4, 16, 17
- Questions 6 and 11 examine the combinatorics of
shuffle-exchange and omega-networks; these are interesting but
perhaps not central to an applications- and implementation-oriented
class
Chapter 9, SIMD Architecture, p 466:
- Questions 1 & 2 (definitions)
- Question 3 (hint: rate vs quantity)
- Question 12 (re-read "the case for SIMD" on p 442)
- Questions 15, 16 (you can skip the DAP, if you like), and 17.
Note that a good part of what we've learned about SIMD computing
is MasPar-specific material that is not covered in the text.
Chapter 10, MIMD Architecture, p 466:
